Town Information

Crail has only a few shops along its short High Street but is a picturesque village with a lovely coastal walk. Crail harbour is well known for the quality of its shellfish catches and local restaurants take full advantage in their seafood menus. The harbour is often photographed and appears on many calendars every year.

Crail is steeped in history. The village has a royal charter given by Robert the Bruce in 1310 and was trading with the Continent as early as the the 9th Century. The East Neuk area of Fife was described by James II as "a fringe of gold on a beggar's mantle", and who are we to disagree.

The area is also well known for its fossils and provides a fascinating insight into the Carboniferous period 335 million years ago. That's what we call history! There is an excellent site, Discovering Fossils, that provides a wealth of information about the geology of Crail and where to look for fossils.
